Privacy Policy
Effective September 28, 2026
The short version. Camp Here asks for your email, the name you choose to show on check-ins, and whatever you choose to share in a check-in. We don't sell or rent any of it, we don't run ads or trackers, and we don't store your IP address. You can delete your account from the app at any time.
Camp Here is a map of public campsites made by Verplanck Publishing, in New York, USA ("we", "us"). This policy covers the Camp Here app and website (camphere.app and the app's own web address) and the emails they send. Questions: hello@camphere.app.
What we collect
Your account.
- Your email address, to send your sign-in codes and, rarely, important news about your account or the service.
- The display name you choose. It's shown next to your check-ins. Your email is never shown to anyone.
- When you created the account and when you agreed to these terms.
- Your home range, if you set one: a map point you choose (it doesn't have to be your home) and when you last moved it.
- Sign-in sessions: when each started and when it expires. The session itself is a random code stored on your device in a cookie; we keep only a scrambled (hashed) copy of it.
Check-ins you share. When you check in at a site or on a piece of land, we store what you enter (signal bars by carrier, getting in, conditions, how busy it was, your note), the date you give, the site's location and map key, and which account posted it. Check-ins are public to everyone signed in to Camp Here, with your display name and the date. Please don't put anything in a note you wouldn't want other campers to read.
Feedback you send. When you use "Send feedback" or "Report a problem", we keep what you write, any screenshot you add, your email address and display name (or the email you type in, if you're signed out), the site or map area you were looking at, the app version and your browser type, so we can look into it and reply to you. Feedback is deleted with your account, or sooner if you ask.
Flags. If you flag someone's check-in, we record that your account flagged it, so each account counts once.
The waitlist. If you leave your email on camphere.app before launch, we keep it to tell you when Camp Here opens.
Limits against abuse. To stop floods of sign-in emails or sign-ups, we count requests per day against a one-way hash of your email address or IP address and the date. The hash can't be turned back into the address, and we never store your IP address itself.
What stays on your device
Most of Camp Here runs on your phone or computer and stays there: sites and maps you download for offline use, sites you save, files you import (spreadsheets, GPX, KML, GeoJSON), your map settings, and check-ins waiting for signal. They're kept in your browser's storage. We never receive the files you import. Your location, when you use "locate me", is used on your device only to move the map; it isn't sent to us.
The only cookie Camp Here sets is the sign-in session (named ch_s). It lasts 90 days, is renewed when you use
the app with signal, and is removed when you sign out. There are no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies.
Who else sees data
We don't sell, rent or trade personal information. These services handle some of it so Camp Here can work:
- Cloudflare hosts the app and its database (your account and check-ins). As with any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver pages to you.
- Resend sends our emails, so it receives your email address and the message.
- Map and data providers. Your device loads map tiles directly from the provider you pick (USGS, Esri or OpenStreetMap), public-land boundaries from Esri (PAD-US) and New York State DEC, site photos from the agencies that publish them, and fonts from Google Fonts. Those services see the request, including your IP address, as they would from any website. The spreadsheet reader for imports loads from cdnjs (Cloudflare) only when you import a spreadsheet.
- Google Maps opens when you press Directions, with that site's coordinates.
We'll share information if the law requires it (for example a valid subpoena), or to protect people's safety or our rights. If Camp Here is ever sold or merged, your information would move with it under this policy, and we'd tell you first.
How long we keep it
- Your account: until you delete it.
- Sign-in codes: 15 minutes, or until used. Sessions: 90 days from your last use, or until you sign out.
- Check-ins: until you remove them or we hide or remove them. The app shows the last three years.
- Waitlist emails: until launch, or until you ask us to remove yours.
- Feedback: until it's dealt with and no longer needed, and never longer than your account.
Deleting your account
In the app: side panel → Account → Delete account. That permanently removes your email, display name, home range and sign-in sessions. Check-ins you already shared stay on the map, shown as "Deleted user" (your feedback is deleted), because other campers rely on them. If you want your check-ins gone too, remove each one (its Remove button) before deleting the account, or email us and we'll do it. Downloads and saved sites on your device are yours to keep; clearing the app's site data in your browser removes them.
You can also ask us, at hello@camphere.app, for a copy of what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. We'll answer within 30 days.
Security
There are no passwords to leak. Sign-in codes and session tokens are stored only as one-way hashes, the connection is always encrypted (HTTPS), and the session cookie can't be read by scripts. No system is perfectly secure; if something goes wrong that affects your information, we'll tell you.
Children
Camp Here isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has made an account, tell us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top, and for anything important we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
